Objectives: Comprehension: The second grade student will discuss:
And review the terms reduce, reuse, recycle through group discussion and will be assessed through participation in the discussion
Synthesis: The second grade student will plan:
A script within a fifteen minute time period collaboratively within their assigned groups which will approved by the teacher based on 90% accuracy
Application: The second grade student will produce:
A thirty second commercial in fifteen minutes with a flip video camera and provided props to display their understanding of the importance of recycling or to convince others to recycle which will be evaluated based on creativity and accuracy
Materials:
Flip Video Cameras
Paper
Pens/pencils
Props (recyclable materials, recycle bins)
Instructions and Procedures:
Review the terms Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle with the class
oReduce means to make something smaller or use less, resulting in a smaller amount of waste.
oReusing something means to use a material again in its original form, or to give it to someone else who can use it.
oRecycling is when you save a reusable material and take it to where it can be made into something new.
Require student participation with help in review
Divide class into five groups
Tell students they are going to be the directors and actors of a thrity second commercial on recycling
The commercial may include a rap, song, dance, or just narration
First, have the students plan out a script for their commercial on paper
Once they have completed their “storyboard” distribute flip video cameras
Allow 15 minutes for the groups to plan and 15 minutes for the groups to record
If time allows have a few students share their commercials with the class
Assessments:
Informal- Ability to cooperate within their commercial groups
Formal- Completion and overall quality of commercial
